Hull seeks partner for retail revamp

Hull City Council is seeking a private sector partner for a new retail and leisure scheme covering the city, including its proposed £130m Albion Square development.

The council will select a partner for the 25-year contract through a competitive tendering process.

The 237,000 sq ft Albion Square site will form the first phase of the partnership. The city centre development includes 189,000 sq ft of retail space across 12 units.

The strategic partnership will also develop and market the city’s “Royal Quarter” brand, which covers the area bounded by Ferensway to the west, Albion Street to the north, the main A63 trunk road to the south, and Bond Street/Queens Gardens to the east.

This would include Albion Square as well as already-established retail areas such as King Edward Street, Jameson Street, Paragon Street, and Carr Lane.

The objective will be to “firmly position” the Royal Quarter as a leading sub-regional brand.

The council said in its tender notice that the long-term nature of the partnership is “intended to facilitate the creation of a strategic vision for the city centre”.
