Amazon scours high street to open shops

Amazon is working on acquiring a significant number of small retail sites as it lays the groundwork to bring its checkout-free grocery shops to Britain.

The web giant is seeking stores of between 4,000 sq ft and 5,000 sq ft, according to industry sources.

That size is suitable for Amazon Go, a fledgling chain which uses technology to track what shoppers put in their baskets so they can be automatically billed when they leave, without queuing.
