Grant Thornton has accused Robert Tchenguiz of playing “tactical games” by bringing a lawsuit against it worth hundreds of millions of pounds that it claims is an “abuse of process”.
Lawyers for the professional services firm said that allegations by Mr Tchenguiz that the firm had “fed lies to the Serious Fraud Office” about him were “genuinely preposterous”, in opening submissions presented to the High Court on day two of a court battle that is set to last three months.
Adrian Beltrami, QC, for Grant Thornton, said that Mr Tchenguiz’s allegations “have been invented and in many cases they are maintained even though the claimants have actual knowledge that they are untrue”. He called the property entrepreneur’s case “factually erroneous” and “implausible”.
