The building billed as the world’s most sustainable office has won this year’s Riba Stirling Prize. The £1bn Bloomberg headquarters in the City of London is architect Lord Foster’s third Stirling success.
He last won the award in 2004 for another City building, 30 St Mary Axe, more widely known as the Gherkin.
The colossal 1m sq ft Bloomberg HQ absorbs the whole history of London, from the restored remains of the third century Roman Temple of Mithras in its basement and the cleft between its two parts that resurrected the route of Saxon Watling Street, right up to the high-tech terminals of the new financial information age.
