Renters find their voice on ‘broken housing system’

“Renters are revolting,” read a placard carried by one protester outside a meeting of a landlords’ group last month.

“One in five MPs are landlords,” read another. The protest by the newly formed London Renters’ Union is one sign of a problem facing Theresa May’s government: after years of steep house price rises, the growing number of voters struggling with housing costs is finding a political voice.

Apart from grappling with Brexit, May has said it is her “personal mission to fix our broken housing system”.
