City of London targets more tall buildings in Local Plan

The City of London Corporation is aiming to build more skyscrapers as part of its draft Local Plan, voted on today by its planning and transportation committee.

The Local Plan presents a vision to 2036.

Chris Hayward, planning and transportation committee chairman, said: “With 150 days to go until Britain officially leaves the EU, it is more important than ever to future-proof the City for the next generation of workers, residents and visitors.

“The Local Plan, which was today approved for consultation by elected planning and transportation committee members, envisages a more attractive, dynamic, inclusive and modern Square Mile in the future, while recognising that we must also cherish our unique heritage assets.

Currently, there are 53 buildings over 75m in the City. So far, there are also 14 tall buildings in the planning pipeline, including 10 in the City cluster.

In the draft plan, the organisation said: “Further tall buildings will be encouraged where they can make a positive contribution to their surroundings and the skyline, adding to the tall building cluster in the east of the City.”

It continues: “The draft plan provides a spatial planning framework to support key corporate projects such as… proposals to ensure a sufficient future supply of business space by extending the City’s tall building cluster.”

The plan has identified seven key areas of change including Blackfriars, Pool of London, Aldgate and Tower, City Cluster, Fleet Street, Smithfield and Barbican and Liverpool Street.

The City Plan 2036 will be open for public consultation on Monday 12 November until the end of February 2019.
