Charity and social round-up: A new shelter for the homeless in Archway

Homeless charity Shelter from the Storm has found a new home in Archway, N19.

Established in 2007, the free emergency night shelter had previously operated from an industrial estate near King’s Cross for more than eight years.

After the lease came to an end, the charity purchased a disused supermarket in Archway and has since received approval from Islington Council for the design of a new shelter, community café and smaller, more viable retail unit.

The new amenities, which will include English classes, Wi-fi and yoga sessions, will also be shared with the local community.

Holland Harvey Architects has worked with SFTS to come up with a holistic design that has its homeless guests at heart. Developer Ennismore has provided SFTS with financial support, a quantity surveyor and a project manager.

Other contributors include Quadrant Building Control, MEP Hoare Lea, structural engineer Price + Myers, RBA Acoustics and Greenhatch Group.

The new site is due to open in January 2019 but the charity still needs some help to get the project over the line.
