Wimbledon Park Golf Club to be sold for £65m

Members of Wimbledon Park Golf Club, which is popular within the property industry, have voted to sell it to the All England Lawn Tennis Club for £65m.

The sale will enable the AELTC to triple its size, build new courts and move the Wimbledon qualifying competition onto the land. WPGC will continue to operate as an 18-hole golf course until 31 December 2021, with at least a further year as a nine- or 10-hole golf course.

The AELTC said it will start considering plans for the site, stressing that there are no plans to build multi-storey car parks, shopping villages or any other buildings that “would be completely out of character for the AELTC and the Championships”.

Members of the collectively owned club will each make £85,000 from the sale.

The sale is pending court approval, and ownership is expected to transfer to the AELTC on 21 December.

Philip Brook, chairman of the AELTC, said: “The decision of the Wimbledon Park Golf Club members to vote in favour of the acquisition offer is a hugely significant moment for the AELTC and the Championships. We have achieved what we set out to do many months ago in having certainty in our planning for the future.

“In many ways, it will be business as usual for the Wimbledon Park Golf Course during the next couple of years, but the AELTC will use this time to give careful consideration to our next steps.”
