Plans for the residential element of the Commonwealth Games athletes village in Birmingham have been given the go-ahead by the council.
The buildings are to be constructed on the site of the former Birmingham University campus in the Perry Barr area and will accommodate around 6,500 athletes and officials during the Games in the summer of 2022, before being converted to provide 1,400 new homes as part of wider regeneration plans for the district.
A retirement village and community centre will also be delivered as part of the development, which is to be delivered by Lendlease.
Work on the scheme is set to begin early next year. Future phases of the regeneration of the Perry Barr area will be consulted on next year.
Cllr Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “The regeneration of Perry Barr will be the most tangible and transformative legacy we achieve as a result of hosting the Games, bringing investment and regeneration to an area that has long been crying out for it.”
