2018 auction league tables revealed

It was a tough year for the auctioneers last year, with all but four of the top 12 auction houses reporting declines in totals raised in 2018.

The majority of declines across the auctioneers were in the double digits, with longtime leader of the league table, Allsop Commercial, seeing its total raised fall by 15.1% in 2018 to £517.9m. This was down from £610.2m a year earlier, according to exclusive data from Essential Information Group. Including online sales, EIG figures show a total of £522.2m – more than 14% down on 2017.

Allsop Commercial and Allsop Residential retained their one, two positions at the top of the league, with Savills, Acuitus and Barnard Marcus making up the rest of the top five, despite declines of  24.6%, 21.9% and 13.7% respectively.

The top 12 auction houses collectively sold just less than £2.5bn of lots in 2018, down by 10.2% on 2018.

Looking to the auctioneers as groups and including online sales, Allsop (residential and commercial) was streets ahead of its competitors with total sales of £930.5m from 13 sales. Its closest rival was Auction House, which collectively raised £461.9m from 200 sales.

Focusing solely on online sales, IAM Sold was top of the league, taking a 58.1% market share and raising £137.6m from 837 lots. SDL Auctions was second in the online league with a 12.7% market share and £30.2m of sales, and BIDX1 took third with 9.3% of the market and £22.1m.

Across the 20 auctioneers that online sales data was available for, some £236.9m was raised and 1,518 lots sold.
