Housebuilder Redrow has acquired Tesco’s New Malden site in south-west London for a residential development with a GDV of £180m.
The 1.2-acre brownfield site at 265 Burlington Road was acquired on a conditional basis.
Redrow will seek to deliver 446 new homes, with 4,500 sq ft of commercial space and communal gardens.
The housebuilder is working with TP Bennett Architects and Merton Council on the scheme design and planning application. It has proposed 35% affordable housing with towers of between six and 14 storeys and will retain around 575 parking spaces for Tesco customers.
The site is bordered by Burlington Road (B282) on the east, a large Tesco superstore to the west, Pil Brook and Raynes Park High School to the north and a residential area to the south.
Mark Parker, managing director at Redrow East London, said: “The proposed Crossrail 2 route will open up this sought after part of London further, ensuring that residents are able to access all parts of the capital with ease.
“This is an exciting time to be working in this fast evolving part of London, with the council dedicated to developing New Malden town centre and reviving the high street to reflect future and current residents’ requirements.”
Redrow expects construction to begin in early 2020, with the first homes available for sale that spring.
