Hertfordshire’s annual Question of Sport charity dinner has raised £43,000 for Rennie Grove Hospice Care, which provides care and support for adults and children diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and their families.
Sponsored by Aitchison Raffety, the event was held at Sopwell House, St Albans, and was attended by 250 guests.
Following dinner, Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves took to the rostrum as quiz master, getting the evening’s main event under way. The night ended with a lively auction, with lots including a made-to-measure suit from Cerimonia, the chance to design your own diamond jewellery from Galio jewellers and a day at the Sky Studios with the Soccer Saturday team.
HBF and Lighthouse Club boost mental health
The Home Builders Federation has teamed up with the Lighthouse Club to launch a new campaign to help end the stigma of mental health and provide support for workers in the industry.
The charity, which delivers financial and emotional support to those in the construction community and their families, will work with the HBF to provide housebuilders with key resources and training to support employees and subcontractors.
The industry has worked hard to put in place health and safety initiatives for workers’ physical safety, but in the wider construction industry more than 400 workers take their own lives every year.
The new campaign will deliver vital support including the provision of a confidential 24/7 industry helpline and retraining for workers who have been injured or have suffered from an illness which means they cannot return to their normal work.
More than 30 builders have already signed up to the campaign and pledged to adopt the “Building Mental Health Framework”, which gives best practice guidance to companies to help put critical steps in place. The industry has also pledged more than £100,000 towards the charity.

Cyclists to aid Yemen crisis
Arlington Business Park has launched a “Cycle to Yemen” challenge in aid of Save the Children’s Yemen Crisis Appeal.
The virtual cycle challenge from London to Sana’a (Yemen) will take place throughout May, and the business park is inviting the local community to get involved and support the campaign by encouraging them to form teams of their own. Participants can help hit the 8,105km target and clock up mileage on the road and on a static bike.
Save the Children is currently helping to treat sick and injured children in 167 fixed health centres and 23 hospitals throughout Yemen.
The Cycle to Yemen initiative has been organised by Arlington Business Park’s owner, APAM. For more information, visit www.race2yemen.com
