South Cambridgeshire District Council has given the green light to Urban&Civic and the Ministry of Defence’s plans for 6,500 new homes at the former Waterbeach Barracks, near Cambridge.
Development on the 716-acre site will also include associated employment, transport, educational, health and community uses.
The application was submitted jointly by Urban&Civic and the Secretary of State for Defence in February 2017.
The brownfield site is three miles from the Cambridge science and business parks.
In September 2018 the site was included within the South Cambridgeshire Local Plan by government inspectors.
The land will remain in majority ownership of the MoD. Initial major infrastructure is scheduled to begin this year, with the first homes to be occupied by 2022.
