Lidl has unveiled a £500m expansion plan in London, including a new store on Tottenham Court Road.
The grocer will invest in opening 40 new locations including Alperton, East Acton, Hackbridge and Watford over the next five years, adding to its existing 88 stores within the M25.
These will also include its first central London location, in Fitzrovia on Tottenham Court Road, measuring 14,000 sq ft.
Its plans also involve a new distribution centre in Luton, the expansion of its Belvedere warehouse, and a 250,000 sq ft head office in Tolworth, with the latter already under construction.
Christian Härtnagel, chief executive of Lidl GB, said: “It’s coming up to 25 years since we first launched in London, and in that time we’ve grown to almost 90 stores, employing more than 5,000 people.
“London is at the heart of our growth plans across Great Britain, and we are proud to be in a position where we’re continuing to create new jobs. Our £500m investment reflects the scale of opportunity we have to bring our quality produce to even more of the capital’s communities, at prices that make it affordable to everyone.”
Lidl opened its first stores in Britain in 1994. The supermarket currently has 760 stores and 13 warehouses across the country.
