Santander’s profits fall by a third as banks tussle for mortgage customers

Fierce competition in the mortgage market and costs linked to branch closures pushed down Santander’s profits in the UK by more than a third in the first half of the year.
The lender, based in Madrid, also said that it would fight a €100 million claim brought by Andrea Orcel after it withdrew an offer for the high-flying banker to become its next chief executive.
