Taunton 2,000-home garden town approved

A consortium of housebuilders have been given the green light to deliver a 2,000-home garden town in South West Taunton.

Taylor Wimpey, Bovis Homes and Summerfield Developments will develop the new neighbourhood, which is to include 350 affordable homes, a primary school, a mixed-use local centre and employment space.

It comprises two neighbourhoods, a network of green space with footpaths, cycleways, and park-and-ride bus connections to Taunton town centre.

The scheme has been designed by Barton Willmore as a garden city, ensuring land value is captured for the benefit of the community, with community engagement and ownership, mixed-tenure homes and nearby employment, in a development seeking to enhance the natural environment.

Barry Williams, urban design director at Barton Willmore, said: “By using the Garden City principles we have designed an environment that celebrates its landscape setting, promoting opportunities to adopt a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.”
