Southwark selects developer to restore Walworth Town Hall

Southwark Council has selected General Projects for a 150-year lease over the Walworth Town Hall in Elephant and Castle.

The developer has been selected along with its joint venture partner British Airways Pension Trustee Limited, following a 15-month competitive tender process.

The 50,000 sq ft, Grade II listed building has been empty since it was damaged by a fire in 2013. It will now undergo a sensitive refurbishment and restoration.

General Projects aims to reinvent the building as a flexible workspace hub. The workspaces will be accompanied by a new cultural gallery space, healthy cafe and local community centre.

Jacob Loftus, chief executive of General Projects, said: “We strongly believe in retaining and celebrating the building’s original architecture while seeking to breathe a new life and energy into it.

“The local area has a rich history as one of London’s most diverse and creative districts, and we hope the new town hall will become a new hub for this vibrant neighbourhood.”
