Battle of the labs takes centre stage

John Prescott will go to the High Court today to fight animal rights campaigners who are challenging his decision to overrule his own planning inspector on the building of a £32m neurological research centre at Cambridge.

The inspector found against the scheme which was proposed for a greenfield site in Huntingdon Road.

Plans to build the centre have collapsed but Prescott’s move means building could start again.

Meanwhile, animal rights protesters have pledged to continue fighting against the construction of an £18m animal testing laboratory at Oxford University.

A rally at the weekend wound its way though the streets of Oxford to the site of the building scheme. Montepellier and RMC have already pulled out because of intimidation.
