Offloading unwanted, over-rented office space
In a time of falling rental levels, for offices in particular, a tenant who is anxious to sublet may rue the day that he agreed to the various restrictions contained in his lease. Such options as may be open to him are carefully reviewed by Thornton Allen, of Linklaters: see Occupational hazards Estates Gazette 5 October 2002, p167, which, among other things, throws fresh light on Allied Dunbar Assurance plc v Homebase Ltd [2002] EWCA Civ 666; [2002] 27 EG 144 (briefly mentioned in PP 2002/131).
For a possible way round the Homebase decision see A do-it-yourself solution Estates Gazette 8 March 2003, p159.
