White asbestos will be banned in Britain from 24 November, deputy prime minister John Prescott announced today.
The move aims to prevent the importation of white asbestos and its supply or use in any construction operations.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) is also due to publish a consultation paper on proposals to ensure that property owners identify and monitor all asbestos in their buildings. The paper was scheduled to appear at the beginning of this month, but has been postponed until October.
Health and safety specialist Lyn McPherson of Nabarro Nathanson said: “Prescott’s ban is welcome, but it is just the tip of the iceberg. The HSE consultation is far more serious. If it becomes law, landlords will have to search for asbestos, make notes and basically manage the substance. It will have a real impact on all property owners.”
