2,000 reserve NewBuy homes

More than 2,000 people have reserved new homes through NewBuy, the government-backed mortgage indemnity scheme, since its launch in March.

According to new figures from the Home Builders Federation, the 50th house builder also registered to sell homes through the scheme this week.

A sixth lender, Aldemore, launched its NewBuy product in September.

NewBuy allows buyers to secure newly built homes with a 5% deposit. At the time of launching, the government said it was expected to help 100,000 first-time buyers. In its first three months, it had helped just 250 people buy new homes.

Stewart Baseley, executive chairman of HBF, said: “Reaching 2,000 NewBuy reservations clearly demonstrates the customer need for such a scheme. Over the coming years NewBuy will make a real difference and help tens of thousands of people realise their ambitions of home ownership. In turn this will then help kick-start new home construction, creating economic growth and thousands of jobs across the country.”
