35 Southern Cross properties safeguarded

Maria Mallaband Care Group has agreed to take more than 35 of the 82 Southern Cross care homes that were left without an operator.

The Yorkshire homes, which are in Bridlington and Harrogate, will be operated by MMCG’s newly created company, Countrywide Care Homes.

Philip Burgan, chief executive of MMCG, said: “The Southern Cross deal moves us into a new sector. I believe Countrywide Care Homes will be a valuable addition to the group.”

The properties are some of the 8.5% of Southern Cross buildings that were still without a new manager when the beleaguered care homes group presented the GMB union with a list of proposed operating companies for the business last month.
