Stockport council has secured full planning permission for a £45m retail and leisure scheme, known as Redrock, on the former Bridgefield Street car park in the Greater Manchester town.
The scheme is anchored by a new 40,000 sq ft cinema, which has been prelet to The Light Cinemas. It will also have a new multi-storey car park linked to the Debenhams and Merseyway car parks.
Both Princes Street and Bridgefield Street will be effectively pedestrianised with new pedestrian and cycle friendly surfaces.
The scheme is designed by BDP, which is also the appointed planning consultant. GVA and Lunson Mitchenall are advising Stockport council on lettings and investment.
Stockport council executive member for economic development and regeneration Patrick McAuley said: “Redrock is a vital catalyst for the continued development of Stockport town centre as we work to create a vibrant, sustainable urban destination catering for all.
“It is one of a number of regeneration projects taking place in Stockport as the council is committed to investing in the economic growth and regeneration of the borough to bring more jobs and opportunities here.
“Having carried out a number of public consultations, we are pleased to have secured planning for Redrock, which is a huge milestone for the town. Although challenging, we hope to start on site this year with a view to occupation early in 2017.”
