5 Canary Wharf vision for West London

Old Oak Common in west London could be transformed into a Canary Wharf-style development as a result of regeneration plans linked to HS2.

The vision for the circa 100 acres of semi-derelict industrial land comprises 19,000 new homes, schools and leisure facilities. Some 90,000 jobs would also be created.

The regeneration plans have been prompted by the proposed arrival of HS2. The government has earmarked Old Oak Common for a new overground station as the main interchange between the high-speed north-south rail link and Crossrail.

Drawn up by Major of London Boris Johnson, Transport for London and Hammersmith & Fulham, Brent, Ealing and Kensington & Chelsea councils, the scheme would take 30 years to deliver.

Hammersmith & Fulham council leader Nicholas Botterill said: “Imagine putting Canary Wharf on top of Britain’s premier high-speed hub station and you will get a flavour of what could be possible.”

Isabel Dedring, deputy mayor for transport, said: “Old Oak Common is a true opportunity area for our capital. A super transport hub in this location would drive significant regeneration in the surrounding area and support the creation of thousands of new jobs and new homes.”

The ideas put forward in the new vision for Old Oak Common form part of the authorities’ local plan reviews.

The deadline for public consultation responses is 6 September.
