LISTEN: The 101,000 sq m (1.1m sq ft) Mall of Scandinavia in Stockholm opened its doors to the public yesterday.
The centre is Sweden’s largest shopping centre and one of three owned by Unibail-Rodamco but managing director, Lars-Ake Tollemark, said Stockholm was still undershopped and there was room for more. “The growth in Stockholm so big so that we could easily open another one on the southboard, as the Mall of Scandinavia is located north and then in the future there could be other ones not necessarily 100,000 sq ft,” he said.
Just seven minutes from Stockholm city centre, the €640m (£453m) 101,000 sq m the Stockholm development has 224 retailers and 10,000 sq m of leisure.
The mall has several firsts for the Nordics: Nike, JD, and Oakley have all taken sites. Firsts for Sweden include Disney, Lego, Toys R Us and Imax. There are also numerous flagship stores such as Superdry.
Tollemark said: “When we launched three years ago we decided the mall should be the ‘flagship mall’. It was very important for us to have those international names. We have to compete with all the other shopping experiences and malls being different is vital.”
Unibail-Rodamco has 72 centres in its portfolio, which was valued at €35.7bn in June. The company also has an €8.2bn development pipeline across Europe that includes 11 brownfield and 16 extension/refurbishment projects in the next five years.
