Praia del Rey golf and country club, on Portugal’s Silver Coast, again played host to the Green & Partners and Estates Gazette Golf Championship.
A strong field with handicaps ranging from 2 to 24 battled strong winds on the first day, and EG’s Dave Allen started badly, a huge swipe managing a drive of only 3ins.
Top score on day 1 was posted by Neil Yeomans of Latham Yeomans, with an excellent 38.
With winds gusting to 40kph on day 2, scoring was much tougher. Doug Thornton of the Tesco Invitation team hooked his drive horribly on the 12th (he stresses it was the wind) into the hotel’s clock tower.
Day 2’s winner was John Luttrell with a fantastic 33.
The final day saw perfect conditions, and a top score of 42 points for the winning round.
A gala dinner concluded with Richard Leslie of Dukelease taking the gavel as auctioneer for the charity raffle which raised £8,000 for SPARKS.
