The Department of Work and Pensions decision not to renew the contract for the Post Office Card Account in 2010 has put the network of post offices in rural areas at risk, the organisation has told Philip Dunne, Conservative MP for Ludlow.
Alan Cook, managing director of the Post Office, said the network of branches lost £2m a week on its operations but earned revenue of £200m from the use of the card.
Cook said the network, both urban and rural, was a vital part of the country’s fabric.
