Abbey National is planning a 13,935sq m (150,000sq ft) office building for its own occupation in Bradford. This follows its merger with Bradford-based National & Provincial Building Society, which took effect this week.
Abbey intends to develop the scheme on about half of the council-owned Bradford Interchange bus station in Bridge Street, part of which is used as a car park. The outline planning application includes a four- storey building with 340 car parking spaces and will be built in two phases, the first being 10,219sq m (110,000sq ft).
A spokesman for Abbey National said it was too early to decide which office buildings would be surplus to requirements following the merger. However, 125 High Street branches, mainly in the Midlands and the south will be closed because of duplication. Dalgleish & Co has been appointed to dispose of the branches.
