Abtech submits plan for 14.16ha leisure park near Wakefield

Abtech Properties has submitted an outline application for a 14.16 ha (35 acre) leisure park off the A636, near Jctn 39 of the M1. The site – which is bounded by the river Aire and the Aire and Calder canal – is located 100 metres from Wakefield’s proposed new stadium for Yorkshire Cricket Club. The developer hopes to obtain consent in September and complete the scheme by December 1997.

Proposals for the park include a multi screen cinema, restaurants, theme pubs, a fitness centre, a new marina and a hotel. The scheme will be built as a single phase on a pre-let basis. Three unnamed cinema operators are in negotiations for the development of an 8,825.5 – 12,077 sq m (95,000 – 130,000 sq ft) multiplex.

Abtech acquired the site for an undisclosed sum from BICC subsidiary Johnson Wire. Decontamination work is currently being carried out prior to handover. Abtech will take full possession on January 1 next year.

St Quintin acted for Abtech and Matthews & Goodman advised Johnson Wire.
