Designs for a £35m museum in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, have been submitted for planning approval.
Manchester architect AEW submitted designs for a 215,000 sq ft museum on behalf of Southend-on-Sea borough council to display, among other things, a burial of Saxon treasures that were found in 2003.
Consultation on the plans began on 3 January this year, and if planning permission is granted, the development is estimated to take three years to complete.
Derek Jarvis, cabinet member responsible for culture at Southend council, said: “We hope residents and visitors will see this as iconic and that it will vie with the pier to be one of the places that must be seen in Southend.”
Andrew Titterton, associate director at AEW, said: “To the delight of our client, we’ve worked our original concept through to detailed design within budget and I believe the scheme demonstrates our understanding of the complexity and uniqueness of the site, preserving the gardens and historical environment but also providing an identifiable museum that we hope will establish itself as one of the most important in the UK.”
