AEW UK Investment’s Urban Real Estate Fund is set to invest £4.7m in the refurbishment of Grade II listed Spectrum Building in Swindon to make it more sustainable and suitable for multiple occupancy.
The 260,000 sq ft Norman Foster-designed building is renowned as one of the most distinctive examples of the “high tech” architectural style, with its bright yellow tubular masts and arched steel beams.
It was built in the 1980s as a distribution centre for Renault and has since gone through various incarnations, including as a children’s play centre.
It is managed by MAPP who is working with ECUS Ecological Consultants, KJ Tait Engineering and contractor Beard Construction on the refurbishment.
Alex Herrmann, partner at MAPP Building Consultancy, said: “The intense scrutiny on sustainability and the changing way occupiers are interacting with the built environment has made refurbishments such as this even more important.”
The project consists of a roof refurbishment, repair, and redecoration of the steel frame as well as cladding and additional utility provisions to enable multiple occupancy.
