Airbnb tenant leaves after not paying rent for 570 days

A “tenant from hell” has finally left a Californian Airbnb property after avoiding rent for 570 days.

Elizabeth Hirschhorn was supposed to stay at the guesthouse for six months but became involved in a stand-off with the landlord.

She requested a $100,000 relocation fee to move out of the property in the upmarket district of Brentwood, but the landlord, Sascha Jovanovic, baulked at the offer. Instead, he and Hirschhorn sued each other.

A judge in Los Angeles, citing the city’s eviction protection laws, said he could not force her to leave. Hirschhorn’s lawyers alleged that the landlord had not obtained the required occupancy licence for the guesthouse, so she did not have to pay rent.

The Los Angeles Police Department attended the property as Hirschhorn packed her belongings on Friday, but her lawyers have implied that the saga is far from over.
