Airport City Manchester has launched the first phase of a £180m hotel district development at Manchester Airport with Holiday Inn and Ibis Budget.
It will deliver a 280-room Holiday Inn and a 262-room Ibis Budget next to Terminal 2 as part of the airport’s £1bn transformation programme.
A full planning application has been submitted, with construction targeted to start in early 2019 and completion scheduled for Q1 2021.
The development marks the start of a wider hotels project at the airport.
Airport City Manchester – a joint venture between Manchester Airports Group, Beijing Construction Engineering Group International and Greater Manchester Pension Fund – also received planning consent in February for the creation of a 375-room four-star hotel and a 254-room three-star hotel next to the airport’s interchange.
Once completed, the hotel district will have four hotels with a total of 1,171 rooms, which is expected to create 500 jobs.
Lynda Shillaw, chief executive of MAG Property, said: “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with the consortium that will mark the development of our new £180m hotel district at Airport City Manchester.
“Increasing the number of hotels at the airport is underpinned by the significant growth that we have seen in both passenger numbers and airlines over the past five years.
“The development is being brought forward alongside the £1bn investment in Terminal 2 and the airport being made by MAG at the start of a period of significant development at Airport City.”
Alongside expansion at Terminal 2, the transformation project includes improvements to Terminal 3 to cope with increased demand, new and enlarged airside transfer facilities, technological improvements in an enlarged security hall and 50 food and beverage retail outlets.
The joint venture partners completed the first phase of the project in February.
JLL and CBRE are retained as lettings and sales agents for Airport City.
