Speculation is growing that a Thames Estuary airport could result in global companies with offices west of London moving.
A Thames Estuary airport would result in the closure of Heathrow, the speculation suggests, sparking fears that firms including GlaxoSmithKline, Mars and Microsoft might relocate, reports The Sunday Telegraph. The newspaper reports that high airline landing fees for a Thames Estuary airport could prove a major stumbling block for “Boris island”. It says senior figures in the UK airports sector claim the enormous cost of building the airport off the Kent coast would mean airlines paying seven times as much for landing fees compared with costs at Heathrow. London mayor Boris Johnson backs an airport off the Kent coast. Lord Foster, who outlines his ambitious vision for Britain in The Mail on Sunday, has put forward proposals for one on the isle of Grain.
