Aldi rang up nearly £1bn of sales in December in another record period for Christmas trading in Britain.
The German discount grocer said that the week that began on December 17 had been its busiest yet in the UK, with a 10% rise in sales compared with the same period last year.
Sales for the December month also were up by about 10%, a slower rate of growth than the 15% recorded in 2017.
Analysts said Aldi’s sales were bolstered by an 8.5% increase in space at the chain, which opened 65 stores last year, and the retailer was likely to have been disappointed by sales growth at established stores.
Aldi has 827 stores in the UK and plans to open 70 more this year, as it aims for a goal of 1,200 shops in Britain by the end of 2025.
