Aldi has surpassed Morrisons to become Britain’s fourth largest supermarket chain.
Cost-conscious customers and rapid expansion have helped the chain gobble up market share.
The discount grocer enjoyed an 18.7% jump in sales in the 12 weeks to 4 September, which lifted its share of the grocery market to 9.3%, according to figures from Kantar.
Aldi now has more than 970 shops, up from 920 a year ago.
Fellow discounter Lidl also saw a surge in sales of 20.9%, handing it 7.1% of the market.
Morrisons, which has held fourth place since buying Safeway 18 years ago, saw sales fall by 4.1%, pushing its market share back to 9.1%.
Morrisons was bought by US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice for £7bn last year.
