All new homes to run on green power by 2016

Every new home will have its carbon footprint offset by green energy plants under government plans to curb the impact of house building.

From 2016, new properties will be banned from adding to the UK’s net emissions in a shift towards zero-carbon living. At least 70% of the carbon footprint must be dealt with onsite.

The Sunday Times reports that a new age of localism is casting more doubt on the tough targets for sustainability however, and calls 2020 a “charter for nimbys”.
