Architect Will Alsop has been appointed to draw up a masterplan for Croydon town centre.
Croydon council has also appointed Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design as consultants.
Alsop, who sold his firm to SMC Group for £1.8m in March this year, has designed masterplans for other towns including Bradford, Middlehaven and Barnsley.
The London Plan identified Croydon Metropolitan Centre as a prime opportunity area capable of accommodating thousands of new homes as well as major development and employment opportunity.
In response, the council is preparing an Area Action Plan (AAP), which will provide a framework of how to deliver a high quality mixed-use development.
Councillor Chris Wright, portfolio holder for planning, environment and urban development, said: “Croydon has undergone significant change in the past decade including London’s first light rail system but still has great potential for further development as both a commercial and residential centre.
“It is early days but we hope that Will Alsop will be able to provide us with some creative inspiration to help guide the production of the AAP and engage with the local community.
