The first elected mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, will speak at EG’s Manchester Question Time in September.
Since becoming one of the UK’s six new metro mayors to be elected in May, Burnham has vowed to be “much more interventionist” with developers in order to create sites that are more “sustainable for communities” rather than developer-led.
Burnham is already rewriting the region’s spatial framework, which he branded during his campaign trail as “unfair and disproportionate”, and he has vowed to use CPO powers to buy out bad landlords from the private rented sector.
Speaking at the Chartered Institute for Housing conference in June, Burnham said he wanted greater city-centre, high-density development and would harness the city’s devolution deal to create affordable housing for people in their 20s and 30s.
Guests at Manchester Question Time will be able to put their questions directly to Burnham, as well as a stellar panel of experts including Marty Edelman, the influential US lawyer and chief executive of Manchester Life.
Other panelists include Savills’ planning director Jeremy Hinds, Tom Gilman, managing director of Kier Property North, Salford council’s head of development Shelagh McNerney, and Darren Hughes, partner at Gateley.
Manchester Question Time takes place at Manchester Town Hall on Thursday, 21 September from 5.30pm. Attendance is free. Register here.
