Growing demand for antiques and second-hand clothes helped to lift retail sales in June, delivering an unexpected boost to the economy.
Sales volumes rose by 1 per cent, up from a fall of 0.3 per cent in May, according to the Office for National Statistics. In the year to June sales rose by 3.8 per cent, up from 2.2 per cent in the year to May. Economists had forecast monthly sales to shrink by 0.3 per cent and annual growth of 2.6 per cent.
