Approval nears for final phase of £100m Belfast healthcare campus

The final phase of a £100m healthcare campus in south Belfast is likely to be approved by planners next week.

Developer Benmore Group has been working on the Kings Hall Health and Wellbeing Park with investor Octopus Real Estate, with construction under way since late 2019.

The site includes the Kings Hall – once an exhibition hall for the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society and more recently used for concerts and boxing matches, but empty since 2013 – as well as the wider Balmoral Showgrounds.

Benmore and Octopus want the site to include a primary care complex, residential and nursing care homes, assisted independent living space, retail and leisure offerings, a hotel and a multi-storey car park.

Next week, Belfast City Council’s planning committee will discuss outline planning permission for retirement living, the car park, and leisure and retail facilities. The plans are recommended for approval, a decision having been delayed to make time for a site visit and for the committee to be given more information on air quality at the site.

Tenants already signed up at the campus include Abbeyfield Belfast, a care home provider, biotech company Diaceutics and Malone Kindergarten.
