Archbishop Tenison’s School next to the Oval up for grabs

A former school directly opposite the Oval cricket ground has been put up for sale by online auction with a guide price of £4.5m-plus.

The 1.2 acre site was home to the Archbishop Tenison’s Church of England High School, which closed its doors last summer owing to falling student numbers.

Now on the market for the first time in 97 years, the property is scheduled to go under the hammer on 17 July with Rapleys and Allsop handling the sale.

The guide price represents just £86 per sq ft.

Tom Hanson, a senior associate in Allsop’s commercial auctions team, said interest was expected from “academic institutions, flexible workspace operators, and those who want to develop new homes overlooking one of the world’s most famous cricketing grounds in the school’s existing extensive site”.

The school dates back to 1685 when Dr Thomas Tenison, later the Archbishop of Canterbury, founded a grammar school and library in Westminster. The school eventually relocated to Oval in 1928, with the new building opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII.
