The architect behind the new Wembley Stadium, which opens its doors today for its first competitive match, still believes the home of English football provides a benchmark for the way sports stadiums of the future will be funded.
Focusing on the spiralling costs and delays that marred the development of the stadium, Rod Sheard, senior principal of HOK Sport, said: “Someone said to me after seeing it, ‘Now I can understand its cost.’”
Sheard added: “Until Wembley, not many would have believed it was possible to fund a huge stadium just on the back of revenues.”
