Architects eye Paradise Circus brief

Four architects have been shortlisted to design the 17-acre public space the in the £450m transformation of Birmingham’s Paradise Circus .


The shortlisted practices are Gillespies, Grant Associates, Gustafson Porter and Gross Max.


Each company has submitted detailed proposals with graphics and illustrations and the appointed architect will be announced on the Birmingham stand at MIPIM in Cannes, on Thursday 13 March.


David Partridge, managing partner at Argent, which is managing the design, development and delivery of the site works on behalf of the joint venture between Birmingham city council and BT Pension Scheme, managed by Hermes Real Estate Investment Management, will announce the winner at MIPIM.


He said: “Having spent many years working on the plans and proposals for Paradise Circus, it is particularly gratifying to be so close to seeing the actual start of work on site.


“With the collection of world-class listed buildings surrounding the site and its location in the civic heart of the city centre, we simply have to get the public spaces right.”


Plans for the 1.8m sq ft mixed-use development gained outline planning consent over a year ago and work is due to start on site on the first two office blocks, which total 250,000 sq ft, later this year.
