Argent, British Land, Lendlease, Segro, Barratt and Grosvenor are among more than 120 UK businesses to sign a letter to Theresa May to legislate for a net zero emissions target in 2050.
The letter asks May to implement “immediately” a legally binding requirement for the UK to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The UK’s current target is an 80% reduction in emissions from 1990 levels.
“By being the first major economy to legislate an ambitious, domestically achieved net-zero target… the UK can show leadership on a global level while strengthening the UK economy,” states the letter, also signed by property agents JLL, CBRE and Avison Young.
Other property signatories include the British Property Federation and the Crown Estate.
Last month the government’s climate change advisors, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), formally advised the government that a net zero goal was both possible and desirable within a 2050 time frame.
