Aristocrat forced to open up part of estate to ‘commoners’

The Marquess of Salisbury has failed to prevent a 1.8-hectare parcel of his land being declared as common.

Robert Gascoyne-Cecil had opposed an application by the Open Spaces Society to allow public access to the land at his Hatfield House estate in Hertfordshire.

The area was determined to be common because it counts as “waste land of a manor”.
