Article 14 casts shadow over Sellar’s London Bridge Tower

Plans for Irvine Sellar’s London Bridge Tower have been put on hold by the Secretary of State.

The Government Offices for London has issued an Article 14 “holding order” for the scheme today, which gives the Secretary of State more time to consider whether or not to call-in the application.

The order prevents Southwark council from officially granting planning permission for the 66-storey skyscraper until the Secretary of State gives his authorisation.

Barry Ostle, property director at Sellar Property Group, said: “I think, given the scale of the project, it is entirely predictable that Government Offices for London has sought to secure more time to consider the application, particularly in light of the Easter break. We are informed by our advisers that it is quite within the bounds of reasonable expectation and we look forward to formal determination resulting in a positive outcome in due course.”

The £500m London Bridge Tower, nicknamed the shard of glass by its architect Renzo Piano, will provide over 650,000 sq ft (60,385 sq m) of offices, along with shops, a hotel and flats.
