Humanitarian architecture charity Article 25 has undertaken a project to build an inclusive pre-school for children with disabilities in Mbeya, Tanzania.
Founded by renowned British architect Maxwell Hutchinson, the charity needs to raise a further £34,000 to complete phase one of the construction.
Alongside engineering partners Engenuiti, Hoare Lea and WSP, the project is working with charities Child Support Tanzania and Able Child Africa to build a new campus on a government-donated site. Article 25 has designed the scheme, which includes accessible classrooms for 160 children, a dining hall, music rooms, computer rooms, physiotherapy spaces, a hydrotherapy pool, a sensory garden and outdoor play area.
A child having a disability in Tanzania doubles the likelihood that he or she will never attend school.
Only 5% of children with disabilities in the country are in education, often because many schools are not designed to accommodate the needs of children with disabilities.
Article 25 is hoping that its project can become the model for future schools aspiring to be inclusive of all children, no matter their ability.
