As Wetherspoon expands, so does its tax bill

Investment by JD Wetherspoon will total £400 million by the end of 2019, according to Chairman Tim Martin.

The pub chain’s expansion will see it create 15,000 jobs but Mr. Martin also predicted that the company’s tax bill will rise to £1 billion over the next five years. He cites the disparity in VAT paid on food by pubs and supermarkets as the major threat to the pub industry, blaming it for the high closure rate among pubs.
