Asda and EG Group merger ‘deeply irresponsible’, warns union

The GMB Union has urged the UK business sector to call in the merger of Asda with EG Group’s UK petrol stations.

The union claims it will lead to job losses and a loss of competition.

The two companies are expected to be combined to help bit EG Group’s £7bn debt pile, which needs to be refinanced by 2025. Asda carries some £4.7bn of debt.

Merging the two businesses would result in an empire owning more than 700 petrol stations across the UK.
